If you’ve ever walked outside and thought, “I should have done this three days ago,” you’re not alone. There’s no official rule for how often to scoop, but there are some sensible guidelines.
A simple rule of thumb
- One small dog: once a week keeps most yards under control.
- Two or three dogs: twice a week is a good target, since the pile-up adds up fast.
- Four or more dogs, or a smaller yard: aim for every few days, or consider a service.
These aren’t hard rules. A big yard with one dog can go longer than a small townhouse patio with two.
Always scoop before you mow
This is the one that surprises people. A mower will happily run right over waste and spread it across the lawn, and onto the wheels and deck. Scooping first takes five minutes and saves a much worse cleanup afterward.
Rain changes everything
After a few wet days in Georgia, waste gets softer, harder to pick up, and easier to track into the house. If the forecast has been rainy, it’s worth scooping a little more often, or right after the rain clears.
Your grass will notice, too
Dog waste left sitting in one spot can leave brown or dead patches in the lawn over time. If you’re trying to keep a nice yard, regular scooping helps, and so does moving your dog’s favorite spots around when you can.
Make it a habit, or hand it off
The easiest approach is to pick a day and stick to it, such as every Saturday morning before the weekend. If that’s the chore that keeps slipping, that’s exactly what we do. Sherlock Scoopers handles weekly, bi-weekly, and one-time yard cleanups across Gwinnett County, with flat-rate pricing and no contracts.
